MATTHEW LAND

Matt Land is a Member at Waldron Tate Land LLC. Matt’s practice is devoted exclusively to appellate litigation in state and federal courts. He represents clients and trial counsel throughout every stage of the appellate process, including evaluating potential appellate issues, preserving error, preparing appellate briefs, presenting oral argument, and seeking rehearing or transfer. Matt has represented clients before the Indiana Court of Appeals, the Indiana Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Matt’s appellate advocacy is strengthened by his unique combination of judicial, trial, and transactional experience. Before entering private practice, Matt served as Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Justice Geoffrey G. Slaughter of the Indiana Supreme Court. Working alongside one of Indiana’s most respected jurists, Matt gained firsthand insight into the appellate decision-making process, helping research, analyze, and draft opinions that shaped Indiana law. That experience continues to inform his approach to appellate briefing and oral advocacy, providing valuable perspective into how appellate courts evaluate legal arguments and the record on appeal.

Although his practice is now focused exclusively on appeals, Matt’s background as both a litigator and transactional attorney gives him a practical understanding of how legal issues develop long before a notice of appeal is filed. He understands the importance of preserving issues in the trial court, building a complete record, and identifying the arguments most likely to resonate with an appellate panel.

Among his most notable successes, Matt served as trial counsel in a case involving oppressed minority shareholders of a corporation against a majority shareholder in which he and his team, including partner Brandon Tate, were able to achieve a jury verdict of $13.7 Million for breaches of corporate fiduciary duties along with the setting aside of a trust holding corporate shares.

After his time with the Indiana Supreme Court and prior to joining Waldron Tate Land LLC, Matt practiced in the Commercial Real Estate Group of a large national law firm, where he participated in more than $1 billion in commercial transactions. While in law school, he also served in the Indiana Attorney General’s Office handling tax litigation and in the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office assisting with felony criminal cases. These varied experiences provide Matt with a broad legal foundation that enables him to effectively handle appeals involving a wide range of substantive legal issues.

Matt also works closely with attorneys throughout Indiana who seek experienced appellate counsel. Whether serving as lead appellate counsel or collaborating with trial counsel on complex legal issues, he is committed to delivering clear, persuasive advocacy tailored to the unique standards of appellate review.
